31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #19 - Evil Dead (remake)

Image
Evil Dead (remake) - When a group of friends decide to take their friend, Mia up to a cabin to help her go cold turkey on her drug addiction everything seems to be going according to plan until they discover the book of the dead in the basement and one of them decides to read from it causing all hell to break loose....literally. I know when they announced this was going to be remade there was a lot of grumbling about remaking a classic, but I think they did a really good job. The movie still pays homage to the original, but with it's own little spin on the story. I think it also helped that the director, Fede Alvarez was a huge fan of Evil Dead to begin with and Bruce Campbell was involved. The story is fast pace and the gore is there in a big bloody way. This is a fun gory romp of a movie that still keeps to the original.

31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #18 - 23:59

Image
23:59 - When an army recruit starts to tell the story of a crazy woman who died on the island at 23:59 and will come back and haunt their barracks. The recruits don't really buy into the story until one of them ends up dead and they are forced to realize that supernatural forces maybe at work. I don't really watch Asian horror, but for the challenge I figured I would give this one a view. This film is subtitled, but don't let that scare you away it was a pretty decent supernatural tale with a few moments of creepiness added in. The story moved at a good pace and wasn't bogged by pointless scenes. The thing that did bother me through the movie was the characters switching back and forth between Mandarin and English. Overall it was a decent supernatural horror movie to pass the time.

31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #17 - Crawlspace

Image
Crawlspace - When a military team is sent in to extract a group of research scientists from a top secret facility. They soon realize this is not a simple extraction as they weave their way through the bunker that is located 200 feet underground they will start to learn why this facility is top secret and what they have been doing down there is mind boggling. I wasn't to sure about this film, but I went in with an open mind and I have to say I really enjoyed it the twists and turns of the story keep it fast paced and interesting. It has that claustrophobic closed in feel to it which adds another enjoyable element. There are some nice bloody moments and the horror feel is kept throughout the film. This film is worth the crawl through.

31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #16 - The Purge

Image
The Purge - It's 2022 and the country gets to purge, which means all crime including murder is legal for one night only. When James Sandlin (Ethan Hawke) who is the top salesman for the security systems that almost everyone in the country uses locks down his family for the purge he believes everything will be fine. But, when his son tries to help an injured stranger by allowing him into their home the Sandlin family will now have to experience the purge up close and personal. This is an interesting concept and it does gets you thinking on whether you would agree with what the movie is doing to people, in terms of morality and right and wrong. This film does have a few good moments, but for home invasions movies it's pretty standard.

31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #15 - Cockney vs Zombies

Image
Cockney vs. Zombie s - When 2 bumbling brothers decide to rob a bank in order to help their granddad, whose retirement home is days away from being torn down, they will learn that pulling off a robbery is a lot more difficult when a zombie outbreak happens during your robbery heist.  What is there to say about this movie than I absolutley loved it! There have been so many zombie movies who have tried to duplicate the charm and feel of Shaun of the Dead and have failed miserably, but this movie has come amazingly close to capturing those elements. Much like, Shaun this movie has a great mixture of humor, gore, zombies and great characters. This movie is the movie you recommend to people looking to get into zombie flicks.

31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #14 - Would You Rather

Image
Would You Rather - When Iris (Brittany Snow) is forced to return home to take care of her sick brother, she finds it difficult to find work and the medical bills are piling up. But, when a doctor at the clinic she takes her brother to gives her an opportunity to elevate her debt and save her brother the offer seems to good to be true....the catch...play a game at a dinner party. This is the kind of movie that makes you think if you were in this type of scenario would you be able to do the things you were asked to do. The choices were hard and you could see the characters really struggling with their decisions, but even with that said the movie still plays a little flat. There were some good moments where they could have built the suspense up more, but didn't. The characters were pretty typical and the gore was lackluster at best. Although Jeffrey Combs really embellishes his role and is a highlight of the film, this movie will make you think how so much better this dinner party c...

31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #13 - Inbred

Image
Inbred - When a group of at-risk teens spend a weekend in a remote village in an effort to better their lives and learn team building skills they end up having a run in with the locals which ends up giving team work a whole new meaning! This movie is in the vein of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in terms of inbred family shenanigans, but lacks the overall tone and goodness of that film. I understand the direction the filmmaker was trying to take with this movie, but he failed in its execution. I will say it did have a few good kills, but it's overtly sexual tone gave it a creepy vibe in the wrong way. I'm sure this movie will appeal to some people, but if your in the mood for insane family murderers there are better movies out there.
