13 Reasons It's Awesome to be a Horror Fan

Image
13 Reasons It's Awesome to be a Horror Fan In celebration of Friday the 13th and the Halloween season I thought I would share 13 reasons why I think it's awesome to be a horror fan. Plus Dr. Lector also thinks if I start making lists it will help channel my "creativity" in a more postitive direction. 1.  We have an entire month dedicated to us  - I know being a horror fan is a lifestyle and not just about celebrating it for 31 days, but it is still fun to have an entire month pretty much catered to us. Any store you go into during the month of October has some kind of horror element to it. You can go to Walgreens pick up your prescription and grab a giant spider for your lawn or cobwebs to hang in your house. Other holidays give you a week max to buy their stuff, but with horror and Halloween you can count the entire month of October and even the month before it and several days after Halloween that is still devoted to all things horror. Then you have the horro...

The World's End Review

Image
Okay so I almost didn't get to see the The World's End because it seems I had not accumulated enough of the required "behavior points" in order for this type of extracurricular activity due to an "incident" the previous week. Look, I'm sorry, but anyone who goes around saying World War Z is the greatest zombie movie ever made is just asking to be attacked with a spork....regardless of how many degrees they have. But, thankfully Doctor Lector felt that my failure to see this movie would be a determent to any further therapy regarding my fangirl ways. I do appreciate him seeing the logic and reasoning of why I had to see this movie and after viewing the film I stopped off and picked him up a nice bottle of Chianti to thank him. When slacker Gary King decides to convince his 4 best friends from childhood to complete the Golden Mile, which consists of 12 pubs, one night with the goal to make it to the final pub, The World's End. Gary and the guys so...

Why Your Zombie Outbreak Plan May Fail

Image
1.  We'll all just sit here and wait for this whole thing to blow over  - I hear a lot of people say that they will just stay at home until the zombie outbreak is over. But, face facts even Shaun had to leave The Winchester.....why.....because it became overrun with zombies....and eventually this will happen too. In the event your shelter is not overrun with zombies there is a high chance that you will run out of supplies, electricity, food, water, etc and you will be forced to move in order to find resources. Even on the off chance that you are heavily stocked you still run the risk of someone or a group of individuals overrunning your shelter and forcing you to leave or stealing your supplies, which goes back to eventually you will have to leave The Winchester, i.e. your shelter.  2.  Thinking that you will stock up at the grocery & gun store  - Have you ever lived in a small town and they announce there is a possible snow storm coming and you dec...

Hatchet 3 Review

Image
Hatchet III  - Victor Crowley is back!! The latest installment of the Hatchet series finds us starting off right where the last one left off with Mary Beth (Danielle Harris) blowing Victor's head off. But, as every horror fan knows there is no simple way to kill a slasher....even if you did blow half his face off. Grabbing a shotgun and the scalp of Crowley Mary Beth walks through the New Orleans swamp to turn herself in and claim the title of killing Victor Crowley....ohhh if only it were that easy. As you know you can never keep a good slasher down and Victor is ready to tear it up in the swamps tonight. With this third installment I think Victor Crowley is edging his way into becoming a slasher icon, due in part to the stability that this franchise has maintained. The first Hatchet was a fun, ultra bloody and gory romp with old school effects that horror fans could appreciate. The second Hatchet was a bit of a stumble with subpar kills and the charm of the first film just w...

You're Next Review

Image
You're Next  - History has taught us family reunions don't always end well. They certainly don't end well when the guests are being picked off one by one by masked assailants  So, marks the story for You're Next. When a family comes together to celebrate their parents wedding anniversary it's all fun and games until someone shots their eye out or in this case takes an arrow to the head. Directed by Adam Wingard this film harkens back to the great slasher style films of the 70's and 80's in terms of overall tone and filming. Even though it took almost 2 years to reach theaters in most aspects it was worth the wait. This film has those elements that make horror good with annoying characters you can't wait to die, unexpected and at times fun kills, plot twists and turns and of course blood and more blood. I will admit that at times it does play off like a sequel to The Strangers, which by no means is a negative considering how great The Strangers was....

The Loved Ones Review

Image
The Loved Ones  - As most know prom can be that magical event you will never forget or if you are like Brent and turn down a girl's invitation to prom, it really does end up being a night he will never forget! As Brent deals with a family tragedy getting high and checking out seems to be his only goal in life. So, when Lola asks him to the dance and he declines, Brent soon learns that turning down a girl and be a tortuous experience. I realize I am late to the party on viewing this film considering it came out in 2009, but Fearnet had it on and I had been really wanting to see it. I  really enjoy this flick and I would love to see Australian horror gain a footing over here because they know how to do horror.  The Loved Ones has some nice twists and turns I didn't see coming, which are always great moments in horror.  Even though Lola is completely sinister and evil throughout this film, you still feel a shred of sympathy for her.  There is a feeling of unea...

The Lords of Salem Review

Image
The Lords of Salem  - People have claimed for years that the devil is in music and thanks to the Lords of Salem it's true. When Heidi (Sheri Moon Zombie) a local DJ plays a mysterious new record she receives from The Lords she unknowingly unleashes the past horrors of her town and the insanity she will soon descend into. I wasn't sure what to expect, but thankfully this film is helping to solidify Rob Zombie as a horror director. With his directorial debut with the cult classic House of 1000 Corpses and it's follow up The Devil's Rejects (which is permanently on my top 10 list) Zombie has crafted another great horror film.  The journey you take with Heidi into her madness is a dark and twisted one that doesn't fall prey to the typical horror cliques.  The mood, tone and feel of the movie is consist throughout, which adds a level of suspense that a lot of horror films lack. There are some great memorable scenes and the addition of Dee Wallace Stone and Patricia...

My Amityville Horror Review

Image
My Amityville Horror  - Fact or fiction, truth or hoax you can't deny the impact that the house on 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville did for the horror genre. George and Kathleen Lutz became a media sensation when they shared with the world their 21 days of terror in the Amity house. Even though this is a decades old story it is still a debatable horror topic. Most believe that the Lutz's story is a true story of pure fiction perpetrated in order to receive money while others hold that the events that happened in that house are true, like Daniel Lutz. He was the son of Kathleen Lutz, who George later adopted and he has finally agreed to speak on camera about this life in the Lutz's family and his memories of his time at 112 Ocean Avenue.  I for one am a fan of the Amityville story and the mystery that surrounds it. So, I was eager to hear Daniel Lutz's account of living in that house. I was hoping to hear some new information on this story and what better way to h...

The Conjuring Review

Image
Yes, yes, yes I escaped out of the asylum for a wee bit to have a little "me" time and went and saw The Conjuring. Now, I know what your going to say "But Spaced, you are in an asylum how did you get the money to go to the movies and even get snacks at the concession?" Well, I say never underestimate the power of a little sweet talk, an over the counter sleep aid and a stupid orderly that should have locked his wallet in his locker. The Review I want to start off by saying I am a huge fan of James Wan. I have said it once and I will say it again the man knows how to do horror right, regardless of the rating, which is priceless in this genre. Having tackled Jigsaw in Saw, creepy puppets in Dead Silence and astro-projection in Insidious Wan takes on the Warrens, one of the leaders in paranormal investigation. The Conjuring centers around one of their cases that has never been discussed until now. When the Perron family moves into an old farmhouse they soon...

6 Souls Review

Image
6 Souls Well, it was movie night here at the old institution so I wasn't sure what to expect. Ohhh I figured Disney films or those dreadful "feel good movies" that only leave me full of rage....hey I am working on that!  Anyway our movie fare of the night was 6 Souls starring Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who I hear will be playing a vampire on a new NBC show....mental note must checkout that trailer. Anyway this movie is about Moore who plays a psychiatrist who encounters a patient that may or may not have multiple personality disorders. Now I am not one to judge (too much), but showing a movie about multiple personalities to a group of asylum residents doesn't seem like the smartest move, but I will let the disciplinary committee deal with that one.  Overall it was a pretty solid flick it did drag in certain areas, but it kept the twists and turns coming. Jonathan Rhys Meyers can play crazy pretty well and Moore is always great. I can understan...

Cosplays I would do if money were no object

Image
In my session today we discussed a variety of different topics, but what Dr. Lector wanted to focus on most were fun things I have done, granted he used a bigger word than fun, but you get the point. So, I brought up my various convention adventures at both horror and comic cons, with of course horror cons being the ones I felt most at home. We discussed that I had even tried my hand at cosplay. Although I must admit I thought I would never do cosplay, due to the fact I knew very little about it and figured I could never do it properly. But, I did have some friends encourage me (yes I do have friends) so I thought I would give it a try and I found that I really enjoyed it. I may even post some pictures of myself in costume once  "borrow" back my laptop from the facilities confinement room. To continue, even though I am still new to this still doesn't mean I haven't complied a laundry list of costumes I would love to do someday. But, I think the biggest obstacle I fa...

Horror Remakes That Got It Right

Image
Do you ever have a moment where you think something will go horribly wrong, but in the end turns out to be pretty good? Granted, I have yet to come up with something that hasn't ended up going horribly wrong for me, but I am sure regular folks out there can relate in some way. So, I deviled back into my horror movie infected brain and it got me thinking about when horror remakes go right and I was actually able to think of a few! Go me! Looks like the meds are kicking in to help with clearer thoughts!  Horror Remakes That Got It Right! Evil Dead  - The original Evil Dead has such a huge following that it nearly made it an impossible movie to remake and get it right. So, when the buzz began that this film was getting run through the remake machine there was a huge outcry. But, when Sam Raimi said he would be involved and Bruce Campbell would be one of the producers there was a glimmer of hope that this could be something good and to a lot of people's surprise (mine in...

5 Favorite Scream Queens

Image
Today''s session consisted of listing a few of my favorite things.....so of course I list off my favorite women in horror!   Dee Wallace Stone  She will always be my #1 Scream Queen! If you watched horror in the 80's there was a good chance that Dee Wallace Stone was part of it. With her turns in Cujo, The Howling, Critters,The Hills Have Eyes, Alligator II and E.T. it was hard to avoid her horror presence. I loved seeing her return to horror in Rob Zombie's Lords of Salem. I had the opportunity to meet her and the rumors about her being one of the nicest people were true. When it comes time for the 31 Days of Horror Movie Challenge her movies will be revisited. Danielle Harris  - I have followed Danielle's career since her role in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and I feel like I have grown up with her. One of the many things that I love about her other than the fact she is incredibly nice is that she started out in horror and still remains in horr...

Army of Darkness vs Hack/Slash #1

Army of Darkness vs Hack/Slash #1 (Dynamite)  - Cassie is back and she has got herself a new partner so to speak in the name of Ashley J. Williams. This crossover takes place 5 months after the final issue of Hack/Slash. Cassie is still dealing with the death of Vlad and is trying to live a normal life with Margaret and baby Sandra, but in Cassie's world the dead don't stay dead. When Ash seeks out Cassie's help in finding the missing pages of the Necronomicon you know personalities are going to clash. I had high exceptions for this comic and it did not disappoint. Tim Seeley has got Ash down and Cassie is back as her usual self. Daniel Leister's art for Hack Slash has always been spot on and with the addition of Ash it just makes it all the more fun. - (Want more horror comic reviews checkout  Ghastly Awards   )

Screwed #1-3

Image
Screwed  (Issues 1-3)- Created by Tyler Kirkman Screwed issue #1 begins to tell the story of Anne who is literally jolted alive with electricity! With no memory of who she is or what she is! Now, Anne must put the pieces of her life back together all while trying to escape from a madman named Suture and the FBI. Issue #2 expands further into Anne's search for the truth of who she is, but her memories and visions could have deadly consequences. Issue #3 gets bloody with the bodies piling up and the race is on, on who can get to Anne first....Suture or the FBI. I have always been a fan of Zenescope comics, with my first introduction to them with their Wonderland series, which is one of my favorites. I have always enjoyed their twisted way of re-telling a classic tale. It's risky to take a Bride of Frankenstein (who is an extremely popular horror icon) style character and integrate her into a modern story, but I think with these first 3 issues they are pulling it off qu...

American Mary Review

Image
Entry #1 Mary (Katherine Isabelle) is an intelligent and beautiful girl who's dream is to be a surgeon, but when an event occurs Mary decides that maybe being a surgeon isn't in her future, but when she gets lured into the world of body modification the sky is the limit and the stakes are high. Directed by The Soska Sisters this a stylish view of the world of body modification and the extremes that some people will go through to achieve perfection. On face value this looks like a straight forward torture film, which this is not. This a good example of a strong female lead in a horror film that takes charge and doesn't let it go. It has blood and beauty throughout with really interesting characters that keep the story going. You will want to set an appointment with American Mary.
