31 Day Horror Challenge - Movie #26 - Carrie (2013)

Image
Carrie (remake) - Carrie White a social outcast with an overbearing, psychotic and religious mother learns that she is not like other girls, she can move things with her mind and those powers will be tested at the prom! I think everyone is pretty familiar with Stephen King's Carrie played by Sissy Spacek and granted no one will ever be as good in that role as her Chloe Grace Mortez does gives a good showing for it.  For those that are curious for all tense and purposes this movie is a paint by numbers remake of the original including dialogue, with a few minor changes and additional scenes, but don't let that defray you. I have to say overall, this does play like the original, just a bit faster, but it's worth a trip to the prom on this one.

31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #25 - I Sell The Dead

Image
I Sell The Dead - When Arthur Blake is set for execution by beheading for being a murdering grave robber he decides to reflect on his life to a local priest, Father Duffy. As Arthur delves into his beginnings as a grave robber he tells stories of the undead, reanimated and other worldly grave robbing adventures. This is a cute and slightly charming movie, the story moves at a nice pace and throws in a few little comic drawing of characters to change up the story a bit. I did think it was going to be funnier than it was, but it wasn't completely devoid of comedic moments and there is a nice surprise in the story that I enjoyed. Overall, I Sell The Dead is worth a dig.

31 Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #24 - Underworld: Evolution

Image
Underworld Evolution: After killing Viktor and learning the truth about her past Selene and Michael are on the run from the coven. But, when Marcus, the eldest and first vampire accidentally ends up being awakened he decides to release a new breed of monster on the world with the help of his twin brother, William, the first werewolf who is so dangerous he has been locked away for centuries. I get a lot of flak for loving this series as much as I do, but I don't care. I almost enjoyed this sequel more than the first one. I loved how they expanded more on the character's back stories. This sequel amped up the action and blood, which makes the vampire and Lycans battles that more lovely to watch.

31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #23 - The Reef

Image
The Reef - When a group of friends charter a boat on holiday they assume it will be good times on the open sea. But, when their boat capsizes they are forced to make a decision stay with the sinking ship or try and swim for help. I am a sucker for a creature feature, add a shark to it and I am going to watch it. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, the directing is great and the acting is solid. There is a great level of suspense in this film that is missing in a lot of shark based movies. The Reef was filmed in 5 weeks with the use of real sharks no CGI and that makes all the difference. With the combination of suspense and add in the fact that it is based on a true story this movie is another great example to stay out of the water.

31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #22 - The Serpent and the Rainbow

Image
The Serpent and the Rainbow - Dr. Allan is sent by a pharmaceutical company to  extract a possible drug used to zombify a local man in Haiti as he  explores the mystical and deadly world of Haitian Voodoo he will discover that there is no where to run not even in your own mind. This film is based off the book with the same name by Wade Davis. Even though I have never read the book I am pretty sure it plays out better than this mess of a movie. The plot seems not as concise as it could be with at times feeling like parts of the story were missing. The characters were uninteresting and the acting was over the top and at times just down right bad. The horror and suspense is typical of an 80's horror movie that just doesn't hold up over time. You will wish zombification on yourself while you sit through this debacle of a film.

31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #21 - Pumpkinhead

Image
Pumpkinhead - When Ed Harley's son, Billy is accidentally killed by some city folk teenagers he turns to the powers of an old woman to help him get vengeance for his son's death in the form of Pumpkinhead, a vivacious evil creature. But, Ed will soon realize that, that kind of vengeance comes with a price. This is one of those classic underrated horror films from the 80's. Even though the story of vengeance isn't a new one I do like this take on it. I enjoy that Pumpkinhead is not the kind of creature that lurks in the shadows waiting for his victims, he is bold and taunting in a way that you don't see in a lot of movie creatures. Stan Winston's creature effects hold this great alien like quality to Pumpkinhead that makes this an enjoyable film.

31 Day Horror Movie Challenge - Movie #20 - My Bloody Valentine (remake)

Image
My Bloody Valentine (remake) - 10 years have passed since the brutal massacre commited by Harry Warden in the town of Harmony. As the town continues to recover, a series of grisly murders begins again with the townspeople being killed off one by one. Is it the return of Harry Warden or has a new killer immerged? Remade from the classic 80's slasher film of the same name, this adapation revamps the story by adding 3D. This is one of the few movies that actually benefited from the addition of 3D because nothing says horror like a pick axe coming at your face. This is a fun, gory and bloody remake that plays off the original but still has it's own great horror moments. My Bloody Valentine puts the red in Valentine's Day.
