Hatchet 3 Review

Hatchet III - Victor Crowley is back!! The latest installment of the Hatchet series finds us starting off right where the last one left off with Mary Beth (Danielle Harris) blowing Victor's head off. But, as every horror fan knows there is no simple way to kill a slasher....even if you did blow half his face off. Grabbing a shotgun and the scalp of Crowley Mary Beth walks through the New Orleans swamp to turn herself in and claim the title of killing Victor Crowley....ohhh if only it were that easy. As you know you can never keep a good slasher down and Victor is ready to tear it up in the swamps tonight.

With this third installment I think Victor Crowley is edging his way into becoming a slasher icon, due in part to the stability that this franchise has maintained. The first Hatchet was a fun, ultra bloody and gory romp with old school effects that horror fans could appreciate. The second Hatchet was a bit of a stumble with subpar kills and the charm of the first film just wasn't there, but it still remained an entertaining movie. This third installment goes back to what the first film was with bloody, gory and at times ridiculous kills, which lets face it sometimes makes a movie all the better. Victor's carnage starts and keeps going and going to the bloody and brutal end. I also loved that all the main characters were all from previous horror movies  Zach Galligan (Gremlins) as Sheriff Fowler, Caroline Williams (Stretch from Texas Chainsaw Massacre II) who plays the Sheriff's ex-wife Amanda, Danielle Harris (Halloween 4&5) as Mary Beth, Kane Hodder (Jason in Friday the 13th VII, VIII, X) as Victor Crowley, Derek Mears (Jason from remake of Friday the 13th) as Hawes and there are a couple of cameos that added to the film.

I will admit that there were a couple of things that were a bit of an issue for me. One is that they made Victor Crowley sound like a lion roaring which I found distracting during several scenes. I really don't think Crowley needs to make any kind of sound much like how Leatherface and Jason do not speak they just kill, kill, kill. They also brought back Perry Shen who played Justin in Hatchet II, but this time he is a Paramedic named Andrew. I am not sure if we were suppose to just forget that he was in the second movie and maybe this is an evil twin or something (okay he is not evil, but you get the point). They do an ever so slight hint about him being in Hatchet II, but it still wasn't enough of an explanation for me so I figure it's New Orleans and I am sure he has been reincarnated.

Even with the few things issues I had ...hey I'm in an asylum I can get picky...why....because I got nothing but time on my hands besides I am sure regular folk will overlook them anyway. To continue overall this is still a solidly good series, where most series by their third installment are becoming dead in the water Hatchet has still continued to keep the even keel of blood, guts, gore and humor that so many horror movies are missing.
