Why Your Zombie Outbreak Plan May Fail
1. We'll all just sit here and wait for this whole thing to blow over - I hear a lot of people say that they will just stay at home until the zombie outbreak is over. But, face facts even Shaun had to leave The Winchester.....why.....because it became overrun with zombies....and eventually this will happen too. In the event your shelter is not overrun with zombies there is a high chance that you will run out of supplies, electricity, food, water, etc and you will be forced to move in order to find resources. Even on the off chance that you are heavily stocked you still run the risk of someone or a group of individuals overrunning your shelter and forcing you to leave or stealing your supplies, which goes back to eventually you will have to leave The Winchester, i.e. your shelter.
2. Thinking that you will stock up at the grocery & gun store - Have you ever lived in a small town and they announce there is a possible snow storm coming and you decide to stop at the grocery store to pick up a few things and realize in that short amount of time the entire store has been wiped out? Well that is what will happen on a global scale in the event of an official zombie outbreak. By the time you realize you need supplies a million other people have already done the same thing. This also goes for the gun store.....only more so! When people start hearing that the dead are rising from the graves and eating people's faces they are going to run to the gun store to stockup even before they get their groceries, but much like the grocery stores a gun store will be even a more barren wasteland.
3. Thinking you only need a gun during the outbreak - In the event you were actually able to make it to the ammo/gun store and get supplies you will need to realize that you will need more than just that rifle, handgun or oozie in your hand. Eventually like food you will run out of ammo that is why it is always best to have a Plan B in the form of a machete, baseball bat, cricket bat, golf club, etc. Something that is easy to carry and doesn't require a reload.
4. You can save your friend/family member when they have been bitten - When I was playing The Walking Dead game on my Xbox360, which is a great chose your own adventure kind of game. During one of the sequences (spoiler alert for those that haven't played.........) you come upon a woman who has been bitten and your choices are kill her, let her kill herself or take her with you. Being the kind hearted rational thinker I am I let her kill herself, but after the end of the segement they showed what people voted for and I was surprised by how many people voted to take her with you. Nothing gets a accomplished with that decision other than putting yourself and your group in danger. They will turn it's just a matter of time. Don't fall under the thought that you can save them or that help is just around the corner because it won't be.
5. Losing your focus during the outbreak - We have all seen it in the movies the one character gets a little to relaxed in the zombie situation or thinks he has got everything covered and he forgets to check behind a door or gets distracted by something small....and boom they're bitten and in turn they become dead men/women walking. Even if you have been through the same place a thousand times to get supplies or what have you the landscape changes everyday in an outbreak. There is no set level of zombies in an area so just because you think you swept an area and no zombies remain doesn't mean others haven't inhabited the area again. So, stay sharp at all times!
6. Not everyone is your friend - People think times of tradegy brings people together and it does, but a zombie outbreak isn't that kind of tradegy. It is a lesson in survival and the strongest do survive. A lot of us think that once the outbreak happens you will get a big group of people together of friends and family to fight off the undead, which can work, but don't expect it to last to long. High stressful situations tend to bring the worst out in people and daily survival is high on the stress list. People who you would have thought would lay down their life for you aren't so quick to do it anymore and when it comes down to it sadly not everyone is to be trusted.
7. Not every plan is foolproof - No matter how many times you go over an outbreak survival in your head it probably won't go as planned when the moment truely arrives. If you keep a clear head, use common sense, make sure your food is well stocked, weapons are ready and handy and always be on alert there is a high probablity that you will survive the outbreak longer than someone who thinks staying in one place and going to the grocery store is all they need.
